I rode down to Puerto Viejo, Limón on Wednesday, July 5. I went via route 230 through Pacayas, the longer, “scenic” route, but was cold and uncomfortable most of the way until I finally hit sunny skies in Siquirres.

I was surprised at how few cars there were on route 32, and began to enjoy myself more. I veered towards Santa Rosa to La Bomba and found a new restaurant on the way. Good to know.

The weather was lovely in Puerto Viejo, and its beauty is still magical.

I have a lot of history here, so coming stirs up both grief and the familiar feeling of being “home.”

On Thursday, I headed over to BriBri to the Municipality to take care of some business, then decided to return via Paraíso road to Punta Uva. The road to Sixaola is nicely paved, and the road to Punta Uva is a gravel road with a few easy hills.

Punta Uva is one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. I remember going there 38 years ago when there was not a soul in sight!

There are a lot of routes I would like to explore going to the South Caribbean (like the road to Bananito Lodge). And I would also like to do more riding around the BriBri area. Perhaps even repeat the ride to Alta Mira out to Penshurst.

In any case, I was surprisingly happy to be there and take care of things. Perhaps due to riding in the rain on Wednesday, I got sick on Thursday. I had a terrible fever all night, but managed to ride home on Friday, aches and all! Grateful that there wasn’t much traffic and that it did not rain on the way home.
I hope to return to the South Caribbean in September. Hopefully with company to do some recon.
