A natural delight! (Zapatón to Playón and Gamalotillo)

Wow. Nothing like doing one gravel route after another on a day when half the country is at the coast! Such a peaceful, easy feeling.

  1. Robert, Fritz, and I met in Ciudad Colon rode up to the University for Peace then down to Piedras Negras. This is an easy, scraped gravel route that is quite lovely because it is still wild, hugged by green lushness, which is one of my favorite things about riding off road.
  2. We then went up to San Antonio. This is getting a bit rutted again, but is fine. It has nice views at the top. I was grateful the sun was not in a position to blind us, as it usually is in summer. 🙂
  3. Past Puriscal, we took a left toward Candelaria to go to Bajo La Legua. A delightful little half cement, half gravel route.
  4. After breakfast in Santa Marta, we went to Mastatal and Zapatón and down to Playón. Wild fun! This and the next part will be the focus of this post.
  5. Returning, we headed to Vista Mar and down to Gamalotillo to take a new trail to the river. Wonderful!
  6. And, finally, we headed from Gamalotillo to Tulín and out to Quebrada Amarilla.

I love the route to Mastatal and then to Zapaton. One favorite, followed by another. 🙂

The road up to Zapatón is easy to ride.

I was a bit concerned that we would hit clay riding down from Zapatón to Playon, but we did not. 🙂 This route has two tight curves and some spots with loose rocks. Just enough challenge to make it more fun. There is something simply wonderful about it.

After stopping at Donde Andrés viewpoint restaurant for refreshments on 239, in Guapinol, we headed over to Vista Mar and down to Gamalotillo.

Robert guided us to a little route that ends up at the river. I was so HAPPY to be on a new route. Yay!!!

What FUN!!

Then we headed back to Gamalotillo.

I love the route from Gamalotillo to the crossing to Tulín (where I had my accident a year and a half ago). The road to Tulín is full of smooth, red clay. Luckily, it was noon time so it was dry. This road has gotten a bit rougher than usual, for some reason, especially after the little creek crossing. As often happens now, we saw three groups of quad tours.

We came out at Quebrada Amarilla, after enjoying a simply fabulous morning of mostly off road riding. Tired, but satisfied. 🙂

Song: Just the two of us.

I see the crystal raindrops fall
And the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shining through
To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you sometime
And I wanna spend some time with you

Just the [three] of us
We can make it if we try
Just the [three] of us
(Just the [three] of us)
Just the [three] of us
Building castles in the sky
