Riding High on a Fandangled Sky (Route 239)

I decided to publish a post about route 239, which is a favorite of Recon CR. Coming from Puriscal, we usually detour left towards Mastatal or Zapatón or right at La Gloria to Tulin and Bijagual or Quebrada Amarilla. Really fun routes!

Yesterday, after breakfast in Playa Hermosa, I rode route 239 directly up from Parrita, being nervous to enter via Quebrada Amarilla due to the possibility of wet, red clay, which I did encounter anyway, but at least not too much. I am much more careful when I am on Sahara, my Honda CB 500X, riding alone. Sadly, I have to resist many urges to do recon. I hope to buy a smaller motorcycle soon in order to do that.

Route 239 first is of small, loose gravel, and then has a lovely paved part for several kilometers, which is still disorienting, since for many years I rode it when it was not paved. Nearer to La Gloria, it once again turns to gravel. And the last 18 kilometers nearing Puriscal are also paved.

It’s so nice to be kept company by the lush green that hugs it. (Since I was alone, I could stop for photos as often as I chose. Hahaha! I like to stop to enjoy the peace and beauty all the more.)

Rocky III, my new riding buddy, loved it as much as I did, even though I did not ride as fast as he prefers.

Though I had just had breakfast, I stopped by Soda Pura Vida in Guarumal to say hello to Doña Grace and have another coffee.

The vistas are gorgeous.

At Cerbatana (before Puriscal), I took a left to head over to another beautiful road, route 137 down to San Pablo de Turrubares. I stopped by Restaurante La Chosa de Doña Emilse for a drink and to say hello.

I was amused by the bathroom lock, but at least the light switch is easy to find. 🙂

Despite getting caught in some light rains early on, the ride was really enjoyable. I think I saw only one car on route 239. Such a peaceful feeling to be riding high on these beautiful routes.

And I’ll be riding high in a fandangled sky
It’s going to be easy
It’s going to be easy
It’s going to be easy from now on

  1. Thanks for posting this! I’d love to do this route, road less travelled etc. But I think I’m going to get voted down in favour of the crocodile bridge… would love to ride this region on two wheels. Took a CB750K through Mexico in 91, brilliant trip.

Hope you enjoyed whatever ride you took.
It’s all so beautiful here once you are out of the Metropolitan area.
