Strange Magic! From Irazu Volcano to Turrialba volcano on Rt 417

This morning I headed out to the area above San Jeronimo to see the Zurqui Mountains again, I went on over to Coronado/Rancho Redondo (found new road!). My original plan was to go to Los Santos from there. Expect the unexpected when on a bike! 🙂

Instead of going right and down from Rancho Redondo, I took a left to go to Tierra Blanca. Another new road for me! It had great views. Then, I decided to go find that spot where one can see the Turrialba volcano from the Irazu volcano. The road up to Irazu is a lovely road. Lots of great views.

I love this view! I am surprised I never knew about it before. Never too late! I will return.

Then, I figured I would take 417 to the Turrialba Volcano, a trip I have never taken. It was spectacular!

Rt 417 is in pretty good shape. It does get narrow at a certain point, and a bit more gravelly as one gets closer to the volcano. I hit a few muddy spots, but not bad. (Best to go in the dry season perhaps.)

Such a strange magic!

Nearer to the volcano, the road got gravelly and rocky, but, again, not bad.

The road down from the volcano is quite curvy, but easy (no steep hairpin curves which stress me out).

I was happy to stop for breakfast at 10 a.m. in Santa Cruz. I had left the house at 5:30 a.m.

Got to take off all my layers! Hahaha! (It is cold at the Irazu volcano. But I dressed like this because I was originally headed to the Mountain of Death. Expect the unexpected when you ride!)

A day like today was the reason why I love to ride! Such strange magic going to places that are off the beaten track. Love it!

Total time: 8 hours.
