Misty Mornings! (Day 1 NW Tour: Las Nubes and Río Chiquito)

On Thursday, December 1, 2022, my riding buddy, Robert, and I headed out for a three-night trip to the North and North West. Yay!!

Heading up to Monteverde

On our first day we first went to Las Nubes of Monteverde to go down to Río Chiquito.

I have never been through here before and was delighted to be riding on new routes with new views! The winds and clouds added an extra thrill to the morning.

The road through Las Nubes is hard-packed easy gravel. Lovely!

We camed down and headed over to Río Chiquito. Another wonderful, winding route! I only wish it had been clearer to enjoy the gorgeous vistas. I will have to repeat this soon.

Río Chiquito is a tiny little town along a river. I was surprised to pass several tourist buses on our way to La Tronadora. Must be the scenic route for them, as Robert said.

From Río Chiquito we headed over to La Tronadora on a smooth gravel road. It also goes along the lake. I had never been to Tronadora which is a point/peninsula along the Arenal Lake. Charming little area. It felt beachy to me 🙂 .

After a stop for snacks, we headed over to cross Tierras Morenas on route 927, which I simply love! (Previous blog post when it was unpaved.) I prefer it when the skies are clear to see the Tenorio and Miravalles volcanos, but even with the clouds, it is a lovely, undeveloped, peaceful road. What a day for a day dream!!

Coming out 927, we took a left and then a right. I have done this route once before. So cool and wild! At some point we took a right onto a two-track lane with very loose and small gravel (no photos).

After about 10 magical hours on the road, we unpacked in our rooms at Yoko Termales and headed for the hot pools. One was delicously hot and restful. My left thumb tendo was inflamed and terribly painful, so the hot waters were exactly what it needed.

These kinds of trips on isolated, country routes, full of beautiful vistas, traversing wild areas and quaint little towns are one of the things that makes riding such a fulfilling experience. All of one’s senses are engaged.

Song: Three Little Birds

Rise up this mornin’
Smile with the risin’ sun
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin’ sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true
Sayin’, “This is my message to you-ou-ou:”

Singin’: “Don’t worry about a thing, worry about a thing, oh!
Every little thing gonna be all right. Don’t worry!”
Singin’: “Don’t worry about a thing” – I won’t worry!
“‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right”

This whole three-day trip was magical. More posts coming!

I am thankful to Robert for sharing these fun adventures with me.
